It has been awhile, 2016 wasn’t really a good year for me and do hope 2017 will be. Crossing fingers and toes y’all. Here’s a somewhat list of personally significant things I did in 2016, all of which occurred only on the later part of 2016 (so, basically, I did nothing much on the early part really) :
- Seriously into poetry again after all these years….Cebuano Poetry or Balak in particular.
- Attended (much to my wife’s insistence… I can’t be a hermit forever) a two day poetry workshop organized by Cebu Litfest.
- Published a Balak piece included in the Cebu Literary Festival Poetry Folio 2016 (read it here) which culminated in Ayala Center Cebu last November 26, 2016.
- Electronically published/submitted three pieces (read it here) of Balak for the seminal Kabisdak blog focusing on Cebuano Poetry from various balakeros/balakeras from around the globe.
- ….and yeah, I’ve conquered my GoodReads Book Reading challenge for 2016, to read 10 books in which I’ve read 11 and the 12th one almost made it to 2016.
2017….please be gently with me.

I have finished my self-imposed 30 day 100 Words-a-Day Story Challenge. You can read all the very short shorts here. It began last March 2 and ended March 31st. It was a challenge to overcome my writing fears and develop some kind of habit which I did but then again right after I was done I was back to my older lazy assed self and did not write up until today. What a chomp I have been. Anyways, I learned many things from the challenge, namely:
- It can be done. The habit forming to write something, anything everyday for the rest of your miserable life whether for pleasure, for posterity or like what I aim to be, a writer. You just need a whole lot of will power everyday not to get side tracked from other, more enjoyable things like watching a good movie or hanging out with friends.
- You learn many things about the craft along the way. Like correct format, punctuation, word usage and a thesaurus as a life saver.
- You have a long way to go. Prepare for the long haul. Dedication, dedication, dedication.
- Start small aim big. I made the challenge and set it to 100 words only as a stepping stone and boy was I wrong. Making a story work with just 100 words is hard, a lot of hack and slash happens to the work. I do hope what I churn out from day 1 to the end could somehow be palatable or decent enough to build my rep.
- Distractions, distractions, distractions. Focus is the key.
- All we need is a little bit of a push (be it on the 50th floor of a building) and once you start, you can pull through it in the end.
All in all, it was a great experience. An eye opener and definitely not an exercise in futility. Now, a new challenge awaits me.
I’ve been busy challenging myself of late. To write a precise 100 word story a day for 30 days because I feel up to it. As of today, I am in my 20th day and 10 more days to go. Whew. 100 words is not much when you look at it from a readers point of view but writing it, now that’s another matter all together. You have the responsibility to write a somewhat complete story that has a beginning, a middle and an end in a very concise manner. Brevity is a must. Damn, it’s hard. I literally sweat things out just to produce a decent story a day. You start out long words fly out all over the place and an hour later you edit the hell out of it to make it coherent and yeah, 100 words precisely. It’s that hard. Sometimes even a completed story will be hacked up from the original and never looking like the first draft. Also, at times, the story writes itself out refusing what you had in mind in the first place and you just have to let go. The worst can happen is you just stare at a blank page on your computer screen and wait for something to come up. I can not honestly say that what I am currently making is an authentic piece of short fiction or drabble as it is officially called because I have no one to edit or critique my works. All I can ever hope is that I am on the right track and not making a mockery or anything. But who gives a flying frig, nobody reads my post anyways. I heavily rely from the net as always for my resource, such us this site here and here. My goal after this challenge is to finally write a short story (a 500 words or more). I am making steps, baby steps but steps nonetheless and I am quite happy with the direction I am going for now.

Just turned 40 *slow clap* and as the saying goes, life begins. So shall start my own challenge/s to mark it’s significance. I have imposed upon myself to start taking writing seriously with the hopes of improving because I have been off putting this one for as long as I can remember. Thus, I am taking small steps by imposing a 100 word/character story challenge (look up drabble or fast fiction if you will) upon myself hopefully daily for 30 days or till I run out of steam if ever I am up to it thereafter. I just started it this March 2 but I’ve posted my entries to another new blog journal at LiveJournal so as not to mingle with every mixed bag of a blog and also I want to dip into using the bloghost for I have been doing WordPress for far too long. Head on over HERE to view my futile attempts at flash fiction. After I get a feel for writing and gather much confidence I will increase the word count gradually like maybe a 500 word or even a 1000 word challenge even (it will be impossible to post daily for that, I know). Wish me luck.
Also, by the gods, I will try to read and finish some pending slush piles I have been accumulating. Hopefully a book a month? Or is it too much of a challenge for me? Well see.
And also, I will be updating this blog as a challenge this year. I know nobody reads this so what the F. So, that’s three challenges for me to accomplish and what better way to do these things than by cutting off interweb time and productive procrastination. So help me, by the gods. And lets not forget this coming October I do hope I can participate to the Inktober Challenge as well coz I’ve been in it for 2 years now. So, we can add that one too. Whew.
My main band is on hiatus and so is our indie comics gig so there’s more time to focus on the challenges at hand but I am not discounting them for maybe something will come up this year. Nuff said.
Sorry. Not Sorry. Feels like Déjà vu
Unleashing Hell this March 8, 2014
My band’s going to play again. I don’t know it its a good thing or not. We have been on a sabbatical for a year and some months now. By the way, the band’s been brewing up some new original material to debut on Hellfest X, 2 friggin’ compositions hopefully just in time. Stay tuned. Prepare for war gentlemen and ladies \m/. Hope to see you guys there soon. Horns up and stay brutal.
I’m not going to apologize or something here and say sorry for not updating this blog. It would be utterly futile. Nobody reads my post anyways, hehehehe. I am very thankful recently for a good friend of mine The great Tom Perez gave me an early Christmas gift by giving me an awesome comic book issue of Batman/Lobo: Dead Serious No. 1. He just pops up one day and says he wants to give me something out of the blue. How cool is that. Anyways, he knows that I know that everyone knows that I LOVE Sam Kieth art, so, I was in geek heaven then and now. Thanks again buddy, much appreciated, brought tears in my eyes. Here’s the comics I was telling you guys about:
Batman and Lobo in One Comic Book + Sam Kieth = AWESOMENESS
Anyways, after reading this issue, in all honesty, not Kieth’s best writing gig but the art is always consistently Sam Kieth awesome so there you go, quick review or something. But then it got me inspired into sketching again and all I have on hand was my son’s Megasketcher. So, what the heck, I gave it a whirl and this is what I have came up with as a tribute:
I think that will be all for now. Wish me luck or something. I’ve been kinda off lately, just busy with the day job and all.
I fellow artist blogger recently commented on a post from my now defunct blog (The Pencil Pushing Area) that an Indian Google+ user by the name of Srikara Srinidhi is swiping an old sketch I did of Wolverine way back 2009. I feel weird all of a sudden. A little violated. Now I know how some real comic book artist feel about there works being swiped up and auctioned on ebay or somewhere as other than their own. It’s something to blog about, at least. I don’t know what the purpose said guy was or was he just like inking over the sketch I did for practice, for impressing a girl or just for kicks. One things for sure, he did not even mentioned me the slightest bit and that grinds my gear even though I myself I’m not much of a piece of work, I am not Jim Lee or Oliver Coipel who deserves to be aped at, hell, I rarely even sketch nowadays for I am focusing all my comic book energy (yeah, right) in writing some story pieces for our own little indie comics here in Cebu. In all decency he should have at least posted the link back to my original sketch post (which is this one, if anyone’s interested) or mentioned my name and my blog as source in his Google+ post (which is here, if anyone’s interested). Give credit to where it is due or something like that. Thank to Kalegiro, who happens to be have an awesome webcomics up entitled A New Life for the heads up and informing me about it.
Hey, cool art….WTF! wait a minute, thats mine!!!
Anyways, enough of that. Just want to air out or fart out or something. I do hope he comes to his senses though. Its not cool, its not bad-ass.
Update: I have browsed thru the swiper guy’s Google+ page and it seems he swipes from a lot of artist and a lot of users have already pointed out to him to please give credit to the original artists he swiped upon but he has a thick skull, I guess. I think he just likes to ink over other’s art without acknowledging the original, WTF.
In other news, I know I haven’t blogged that much (hey, we no I have not blog squat really) lately and no new sketches or something. Like always, I have been busy with my day job and all and that’s whats keeping food on the table so rightly so but comics and art never left my mind. Well, the 3rd Cebu Comics Convention is still on and were still months away and I feel I am still on the safe side with regards to the deadline we have to put out for the con. My best bud and partner in crime the Zerulean Druid and I have already discussed, over drinking spree of course, a twelve pager for a flipside comics we plan on releasing this coming C3 and I already emailed to him the first 6 pages of it and now I’m waiting on his thumbs and character references before we really start work on the pages. I’m excited as hell. Imagine a cross between Hellblazer, Jonah Hex and Trese, that’s what we are cooking up. Nuff said.
